On November 2012, 36 year old Ryan Collins began sending fake emails to several celebrities to acquire their passwords and usernames. After getting their needed information, he would hack into their email accounts as well as download their Apple’s iCloud to get to search for numerous private photos.
You may have seen some of these photos before because most of the victims were A-list stars like Jennifer Lawrence, Kate Upton, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Ariana Grande, Teresa Palmer and many many more! This leaking scandal is also called #TheFappening
Ryan Collins is from Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He was charged in L.A by violating the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act. By violating these terms, he was supposed to be in jail for 5 years. But because there were no clear evidence that he was the one who uploaded the nude photos, the U.S attorney’s office said that his sentence could be lowered down to 18 months.
Ryan Collins’s case will be transported to Pennsylvania after compromising with at least 72 Gmail and 50 iCloud accounts from several known personalities. Assistant Director David Bowdich stated that:
“By illegally accessing intimate details of his victims’ personal lives, Mr. Collins violated their privacy and left many to contend with lasting emotional distress, embarrassment and feelings of insecurity,”
“We continue to see both celebrities and victims from all walks of life suffer the consequences of this crime and strongly encourage users of Internet-connected devices to strengthen passwords and to be skeptical when replying to emails asking for personal information,”
