As one of the best-known personalities in the world of cooking, Paula Deen is an inspiration when it comes to making mouthwatering meals. And now, after Deen and her family lost a collective 200 pounds, she’s a major inspiration in the world of fitness too!
The loveable 66-year-old Food Network star shed 40 pounds from her frame (trading in her size 16/18 pants for a size 12), while husband Michael has lost more than 100 pounds, oldest son Jamie got rid of an excess 45 pounds, and youngest son Bobby said goodbye to more than 30 pounds.
Paula Deen’s recipes aren’t typically seen as diet-friendly. The 68-year-old celebrity chef is known for her buttery, fatty, and delicious treats. But when Deen was diagnosed with diabetes, she had a wake-up call – and dropped some serious pounds.
On The Doctor Oz Show this week, Deen revealed she was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes a few years ago, and she had a hard time accepting it at first. “I didn’t believe the doctor,” she said. “Nobody in my family is a diabetic, [and] we all live the same way.” It took her until her third checkup to fully accept that she really had a problem.
She went into high gear after that. “At that point, I went home to my kitchen and I threw out everything that was white,” she said. “White bread, white rice, white potatoes, and white pasta.” She stuck to that for four months, and lost a whopping 35 or 40 pounds. Now, she’s keeping her weight stable by keeping her diet more realistic. She now eats white flour, but just a little bit. “The thing that I’m trying to really focus on, y’all, is moderation, moderation, moderation,” she said. “You know, eat a cookie, just don’t eat six of ’em, you know what I mean?” When cooking her famous recipes, she says she’s learned to replace ingredients, like using yogurt instead of mayonnaise. And she still bakes to relieve stress, but foists the goodies on her loved ones.
