Theron gained more than 30 pounds in order to play the role of Aileen Wuornos, the serial killer in “Monster,” a role that earned her an Academy Award. She was able to achieve the weight gain by eating a lot of Krispy Kreme doughnuts. Theron has claimed that gaining weight was not her only goal. To gain weight, she had to completely change her lifestyle, and she believes that the lifestyle changes better emulates her character, which allows her to play the role better. Amazingly, she was also able to lose all of the weight by the time of the film’s premiere. Those people who are looking to lose weight should make lifestyle changes, such as dietary changes and participate in moderate exercise on a daily basis.

“Monster”
Charlize Theron gained 30 pounds and an Oscar to play serial killer Aileen Wuornos in Monster. Theron was pragmatic about the weight saying, “It wasn’t about getting fat. Aileen wasn’t fat. Aileen carried scars on her body from her lifestyle, and if I’d gone to make this movie with my body—physically I’m very athletic—I don’t know that I would have felt the things Aileen felt with her body. It was about getting to a place where I felt closer to how Aileen was living.”

Charlize Theron’s diets are all over the map. She’s eaten 30 lbs. worth of doughnuts and potato chips to portray serial killer Aileen Wuornos in “Monster.” She’s eaten well, almost nothing to portray a dying woman in “Sweet November.” And her typical daily diet when she’s not prepping for a movie role runs the gamut from fresh fruit to steak and eggs.

In fact, she routinely cuts out regular meals when she needs to lose weight. For her role in “Sweet November,” Theron did not eat dinner, refused to eat anything after 5 p.m., and cut out all starches and alcohol. Cutting out most carbohydrates is probably why Charlize said she felt weaker and unlike her usual athletic self.*Charlize Theron has always been athletic. She was trained as a ballet dancer, but also frequently enjoys squash and ice skating. Theron also does a lot of yoga and takes long runs.
