Gerard Butler has been getting a lot of attention for his fluctuating body mass, but Gerard Butler says his recent weight loss is easily explained. “I’m prepping for a surf movie,” Butler, 41, told PEOPLE at a Machine Gun Preacher screening Tuesday in New York. “So I’m surfing every day for Mavericks.”

The 41-year-old actor has revealed that a combination of Yoga, staying off the heavy weights and watching what he eats have helped maintained his trim physique. Gerard Butler’s training was very intense for the role of King Leonidas. He and the crew trained 2 times a day 5-6 days per week for 4 months. Their workout included olympic lifting, functional movements and metabolic conditioning, designed by Mark Twight, the lead trainer at Gym Jones. The workout was constantly varied so they tried not to do the same routine but sometimes it happened.

He said: “I ate my last meal in October and I run about 40 miles day. I’m joking! It’s just doing a lot of cardio and extremely watching what I eat. I stopped lifting big weights and I’m doing yoga.” The Scottish heartthrob believes he may have also lost weight because he is doing a surfing movie in the future and has been training in preparation.

He added to US Weekly: “If I wear a long shirt, everyone says, ‘Oh my, God! He lost so much weight!’ But this is just how I look.”

“It’s not hard to stay in shape. It’s hard to be in really good shape!” But weight loss isn’t all from eating right – the Scottish hunk, 40, needs to exercise as well. “He’s most likely doing push-ups, sit-ups, pull-ups and some outdoor cardio such as cycling or running. He’s not bulking up with too much muscle, so it doesn’t seem like he’s engaging in much weight-training at the gym,” says Dr. Bennett. “Gerard lost anywhere from 3-4 lbs. a week due to a strict diet of moderate lean proteins, low Glycemic index carbohydrates, healthy oils and lots of vegetables, as well as a ton of purified water,” says the doc.
Is this safe? Dr. Bennett says yes, if Gerard works with a nutritionist to make sure he’s doing it the right way.
