Bernthal was born and raised in Washington, D.C., the son of Joan Lurie and Eric Lawrence Bernthal, a lawyer with Latham & Watkins LLP. His paternal grandfather was musician and producer Murray Bernthal. He has two brothers, Nicholas and Thomas. His parents are both Jewish. After high school, Bernthal studied at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, and later attended The School of Moscow Art Theatrein Russia. During his time there, he played catcher on a semi-professional baseball team. He was discovered by the executive director of Harvard University’s Institute for Advanced Theater Training at the American Repertory Theatre in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and graduated in 2002 from the American Repertory Theatre with a Master of Fine Arts. Following his return to the U.S., Bernthal then obtained his M.F.A. from Harvard University’s Institute for Advanced Theatre Training at the American Repertory Theatre. After graduating, he pursued a career in theater, appearing in numerous Broadway and off-Broadway plays, before he began transitioning into onscreen work with appearances on shows like Boston Legal and Law & Order: Criminal Intent. In 2006, Bernthal was cast in a starring role on the short-lived CBS sitcom The Class, after which he appeared alongside Elijah Wood in the indie feature Day Zero.
Berenthal scored the part of Al Capone in the sequel to the mega-successful Night at the Museum, and he had his most high-profile success to that point in 2010 when he was cast as Shane in the AMC zombie series The Walking Dead. He also appeared in Oren Moverman’s sophomore film, the cop drama Rampart.

• Together with his brother Nicholas, an orthopaedic surgeon at UCLA, Bernthal runs a nonprofit organization called Drops Fill Buckets, described as an “impact-driven, entrepreneurial approach to making a difference”.
• In December 2013, Bernthal claimed to have broken his nose 13 times.

• He also benefited from making the character more interesting than he is on the page, with Shane in the comics being a jealous ass who’s offed by the end of the first collected volume.
